Republican Radio Host and Conservative Chicago Tribune Endorse Obama

Adding to the list of conservative organs endorsing Barack Obama for President, conservative talk radio host Michael Smerconish said this today:

“I’ve decided. My conclusion comes after reading the candidates’ memoirs and campaign platforms, attending both party conventions, interviewing both men multiple times, and watching all primary and general election debates.

“John McCain is an honorable man who has served his country well. But he will not get my vote. For the first time since registering as a Republican 28 years ago, I’m voting for a Democrat for president.

“I may have been an appointee in the George H.W. Bush administration, and master of ceremonies for George W. Bush in 2004, but last Saturday I stood amidst the crowd at an Obama event in North Philadelphia.”

In addition, the Chicago Tribune endorsed Obama today as well. The Tribune has not endorsed a Democrat for president since it was founded in 1847. Today they printed in their editorial:

Many Americans say they’re uneasy about Obama. He’s pretty new to them.

We can provide some assurance. We have known Obama since he entered politics a dozen years ago. We have watched him, worked with him, argued with him as he rose from an effective state senator to an inspiring U.S. senator to the Democratic Party’s nominee for president.

We have tremendous confidence in his intellectual rigor, his moral compass and his ability to make sound, thoughtful, careful decisions. He is ready.

…It may have seemed audacious for Obama to start his campaign in Springfield, invoking Lincoln. We think, given the opportunity to hold this nation’s most powerful office, he will prove it wasn’t so audacious after all. We are proud to add Barack Obama’s name to Lincoln’s in the list of people the Tribune has endorsed for president of the United States.

I can not believe when I read and watched your October 17th writing “Interviews With McCain/Palin Supporters. Is it true? Not manufactured. I thought the whole America is tolerant, open minded, educated, kind and respectful. Am I dreaming or is this for real? SO much hatred and bigotry, were they instilled on this people by Sarah Palin? If so, does she think she can get what she wanted by distributing hate and intolerance on these innocent people? How can the McCain camp will allow her to spit her poison and allow her to travel on this dangerous path? This is so scary and unbelievable. In this time and age to find people who from their bottom of the heart believes and equates a black man with anti-christians and terrorism. Please tell me there is hope and America is not and can not be represented by these type of people. Please!!!

Hopefully, this is a small faction of Americans. And, sadly, I believe they were like this before Sarah Palin entered the picture. She just stoked the flames and helped bring out their worst fears and tendencies. She didn’t create these people, she just brought them out where we can see them better. But people like this are everywhere in America. But they do not represent America. Nor do they represent the Republican party which, at one time, was not a bunch of religious nuts and racists. There are so many wonderful, intelligent, progressive Americans out there. Hopefully we will see proof of that on election day.
