MUST-SEE FILMS Part 2

film_projector4Here we go again…

Five friends and I decided to put together a quick list of what we personally considered “Must-See Films.”

There have been other film lists passed around the internet, but we felt they were often such contemporary, mainstream lists of films that they, well, quite simply didn’t do justice to the art and entertainment of cinema. We also wanted to acknowledge films that were remakes, originals and/or alternate cuts. And while there are TONS of great films NOT mentioned here, the ones that ARE mentioned certainly show a wide range of tastes, styles and interpretations of “Must-see.”

This will hopefully be an ever-growing series of lists. Both from the original six and many other “special guests.”

The idea is to check off all the films you’ve seen in the brackets before each title (x). Pass ’em around, compare with friends, start seeing the films you have yet to experience…

There are 408 films on this list.

MUST-SEE FILMS Part 1 can be found HERE.

These were originally created for Facebook and our group page can be found HERE.

Enjoy!

Of course, one of the points of such lists is to provide a context for quibbles, debates, violent disagreements and the like.

There’s also the question of why one “must see” these movies. In Part 1 you talk about a desire to do “justice to the art and entertainment of cinema” and that seems a laudable aim, and one sensible criterion for constructing such a list: the films that best represent the “art and entertainment of cinema.”

Even so, I look at this list and it looks to me much like a list I might construct, even with the same aim – sort of a cross between great movies I like and movies of which I am particularly fond.

For instance, two versions of Amadeus? And two of Apocalypse Now? Obviously, there’s no quibbling with Apocalypse Now being in there once. I might quibble with Amadeus, but I would definitely want to challenge the inclusion of it twice.

Similarly with The Thing. I love the first, and the second is scary good fun. But while I can imagine a case for the first, for the second not so much. If I were to include a John Carpenter film, I’d go to The Fog first. And while you have a number of classic 50s sci fi films, you don’t seem to have included The Incredible Shrinking Man and Forbidden Planet – both striking and important in their own way, and probably more so than The Thing, though I too prefer it.

But as I said, lists like this were designed for quibbling. Everyone is going to find things to object to, and films they think deserve inclusion. So let me say what I most like about these lists: their eclecticism, their diversity. Which seems to me what you were aiming for…

Thanks. I’ll do the check-off thing and post the results on my blog at

It’s always amazing to me the films that get left off. That’s why it’s an ever-growing list. Both THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN and FORBIDDEN PLANET are films I adore and their accidental exclusion from these lists is so unfortunate. Unfortunate enough to warrant the next list! Which may be coming soon! As soon as you print a list, 100 titles you forgot to add come instantly flooding to mind :)
