Jerry Garcia Week 2010: Day 7 – The Side Projects

In addition to being the lead guitarist/vocalist for the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia fronted and participated in many other projects that allowed him to explore his forever-expanding appreciation of and fascination with all types of music.

Here are some of my favorites:

Here’s Jerry rehearsing on pedal steel for a gig with the New Riders Of The Purple Sage. This is an excerpt from the rarely seen film FILLMORE (1972):

Jerry Garcia and John Kahn acoustic. November 14, 1986, Bread and Roses Benefit, Marin County Veteran’s Auditorium:

Steve Jordan, Carlos Santana, and Jerry Garcia:

Jerry Garcia and Ruben Blades Latino Sessions:

Jerry Garcia & David Grisman, Warfield Theatre – 12/7/91:

Jerry Garcia & Mickey Hart with Baba Olatunji, Carlos Santana, Hamza el-Din, Bobby Vega, Sikiru Adepoju, and others in Petaluma, CA , February 15, 1987:

The Jerry Garcia Band on March 1, 1980:

There’s so much more out there, but hopefully this has been a refreshing and somewhat magical little journey to the tip of the iceberg…
