Under the Trump Administration, America finds itself in the midst of a worst-case scenario conservative/corporate agenda free-for-all.
It’s very clear to most everyone that Trump himself isn’t calling most of the shots, but he’s opened the floodgates and the result is going to be mass suffering not just here in America, but across the globe.
The way to fight this, to change this, is not only to point out what is happening, but to offer real-world, concrete alternatives. It is completely antithetical to this outcome to get behind Democratic candidates and politicians who choose to align themselves with anti-Trump Republicans over pro-Democratic liberals.
The Trump administration is horrific. But there is always a silver lining. In this case, that silver lining is liberals coming together to offer a truly progressive liberal alternative to what is happening. Not aiming for some conservative middle-ground that alienates a huge swath of Americans, but embracing the values and ideals and laws that we want to see this country represent not only in word but in action.
Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, Tom Perez… These are not those people. They will not take this country anywhere close to where it needs to go. They are not an alternative to Trump. What they offer is a lighter, slightly less offensive version of many of the same ideologies and outcomes. They will help maintain a constant foothold for Conservatives and Republicans to continue to realistically seek their agenda. They do this by consistently choosing to offer those Republicans who don’t fully support the Alt-Right a place to belong, a political refuge, a less-extreme conservative alternative known as today’s Democratic Party. They choose this over embracing genuinely liberal ideologies and goals while actively alienating a massive, vocal, and highly mobilized segment of their own party:
Chuck Schumer mirroring Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign: “For every blue-collar Democrat we lose in western Pennsylvania, we will pick up two moderate Republicans in the suburbs in Philadelphia, and you can repeat that in Ohio and Illinois and Wisconsin.”
There is no win here. There is only degrees of loss.
This is the time when America either decides it is truly a Democratic nation, or that it has chosen to become something else.
If your candidates won’t fight to the bitter end to rid politics of corporate influence and put the bulk of our money back toward humanitarian causes – both longterm and short term – then they are not the candidates who will ever affect the kind of change we need to be the country many of us thought we once were.
If you’re one of those people who repeats the mantra that a truly liberal and Progressive America isn’t actually possible – that it’s “pie-in-the-sky” – then ask yourself why Republicans are doing so well at achieving their most fierce and extreme goals, but you still believe that Liberals are incapable of achieving the same. Who put that notion in your head?
