Articulating the Unspeakable: Painting Outside The Blue and Red Lines

Chris Hedges

Intrepid journalist and author Chris Hedges – who worked as a freelance war correspondent in Central America for The Christian Science MonitorNPR, and Dallas Morning News, served for 15 years as the New York Times Middle East Bureau Chief and Balkan Bureau Chief during the wars in the former Yugoslavia, received the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting, produced a weekly column for Truthdig for 14 years, hosted the TV show On Contact, teaches writing classes in prisons in New Jersey through a program offered by Princeton University (and later Rutgers University), currently hosts The Chris Hedges Report show and is the author of 16 books including American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America; Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle and, most recently, The Greatest Evil is War – is one of the most insightful, knowledgeable, articulate, fearless and outspoken voices in America – nay, the world – today. As a result, he is ripe for censorship, demonisation and alienation from mainstream media outlets and their devout audiences.

Therefore, it should come as no surprise to anyone who reads my blog that Hedges is one of the voices I most trust, admire and respect. He is, quite simply, the antithesis of the corporate, neoliberal stenographers that pass for journalists nowadays. Which means in the growing atmosphere of corporate authoritarianism that is America today, it will continue to become more and more difficult for Hedges to get his voice out there. Criticisms, questioning, challenging and holding the powerful accountable – once hallmarks of responsible journalism – are now relegated to the fringe, to those who must fight to be heard over the deafening caterwaul of mass hatred, fear-mongering and vigorous, incontestable support for the military industrial complex that has become the leading tools of modern day propaganda. Along with the shameless usurping of the language of the Civil Rights Movement, leftism, feminism and democracy as an implement with which to garner support from the very people who will be directly disenfranchised.

This is why voices like Hedges’ are so important to share. His latest piece (link below) hits the nail on the head. From Joe Biden’s deep history of racism, sexism, war-mongering, corruption, deregulation and the destruction of American workers, unions, social programs and the middle-class itself, to the full-on thievery of democracy and wealth by both ruling political parties. I cannot recommend this article highly enough. Not that it’s anything you haven’t heard or read here before. It’s just a new articulation of the overall structure of our democratic demise and the severe hucksterism that gutted both a nation and a planet, perhaps for the last time in human history as the stakes have finally risen to the level of global catastrophe and not just the fall of an empire.
